This was a sick submission by one of our users to the site on what 3 of the most poker mistakes are when players take up the game. Thought I'd share it with people who haven't been checking out the News portion of the site as of late. Feel free to sign up to comment or ghost away and come back as a silent supporter :p

That list definitely hits the biggest mistake casual players make. As players get more experienced, though, the list of biggest mistake changes from major obvious leaks to smaller, less noticeable ones that affect the winrate over a longer time.
One of the biggest mistakes I see marginal players make is overestimating their implied odds. What I mean is that they have a basic understanding of pot odds, but they use the excuse "Well, if i chase this draw, my opponent will call a big bet on the river, therefore making my chase profitable"
Even though you might play against weak opponents, you can't count on them to call big bets every time you hit your draw. First of all, draws are pretty obvious if you check and call all the way down and then suddenly throw out a huge bet on the river when that third spade hits.
Second, your opponents won't always be betting with strong hands. Even if you do hit your draw and they don't notice, they might have been bluffing.
This is an easy habit to get into, even for experienced poker players. Always err on the side of caution when estimating your implied pot odds.
Sorry for the long, rambling post but it's late and I'm tired. Hope it helps.
