Scotty Nguyen’s $50K WSOP H.O.R.S.E. Broadcast = Self-Pwnage?

August 22, 2008

The “Prince of Poker” Shows Dark Side.

Viewers of the recently broadcast $50k H.O.R.S.E. on ESPN got a real in-depth look into what a lot of poker players and insiders already knew:

Scotty Nguyen $50 H.O.R.S.E.

Scotty Nguyen is a drunken PRICK.

On a night that was supposed to be celebrating the life and achievements of inaugural $50k H.O.R.S.E. champion Chip Reese, the ‘Prince’ himself made an absolute mockery of it by drinking heavily during the entire final table, berating the other players, and even becoming very aggressive when the cards started drying up later on in the match. Even his buddy Layne Flack was seen on the cameras multiple times screaming and acting like an idiot - beer in hand of course - as he cheered on Scotty’s behavior.

It is a true understatement that ESPN could honestly do nothing to censor out the damage that was being shelled out by the drunken Nguyen. And unfortunately, cursing, yelling, and verbal threats were a Scotty Nguyen-mainstay at the final table. To give you an idea of how bad it was getting, even classy players like Lyle Berman, Erick Lindgren, and Michael DeMichele were visibly rattled and doing everything in their power to NOT blow their top (Lindgren had to get up on more than several occasions just to get away from Scotty).

As a blogger and avid railbird of ANYTHING poker, I really was both surprised and amazed at the belligerent shenanigans Scotty Nguyen displayed at the final table. Compared to what I witnessed on ESPN, Cardplayer and PokerNews were GENEROUS to Scotty Nguyen when it came to reporting the final table live.

It truly was something you probably had to see to believe - and once you did see it, you honestly felt like you just wanted to forget it ever happened. To see what I mean, check out the video below for a compilation of Nguyen’s actions at the $50k H.O.R.S.E.

Chan Poker Leaving Market.

August 19, 2008

Johnny Chan’s Poker Site Officially Shutting Down.

WSOP Champion and cash game specialist Johnny Chan’s poker site - promptly named Chan Poker - made a surprise announcement on their website earlier today….

“ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END…”

The message on the Chan Poker website is some serious news to me, as it was one of the more promising poker sites to hit the market in recent months. The poker skin, which was off limits to U.S. players, was gaining a solid following and had some great promotions - so it’s any wonder why they would be terminating the site so suddenly.

Chan Poker’s affiliate manager, Brandon Berndt, went on PAP Radio this evening to announce that the funds in all their players’ accounts are 100% safe and will be available for withdrawal as scheduled.

I’ll try to keep up on this story as much as possible as it unfolds.

Electronic Poker Tables Go Live at Excalibur Casino.

August 18, 2008

Famous Las Vegas Casino Goes 100% Digital Poker.

Excalibur Hotel and Casino - Las VegasExcalibur Hotel and Casino has become the newest proprietor of electronic poker tables within their poker room.

Starting this week, the casino’s poker room will be shut down for several days while they clean out the existing felted tables and replace them with PokerTek’s newest brand of electronic poker table - the PokerPro. The casino’s dealers will also been relocated to other areas of the gaming facility during the move. Overall, a total of 12 of these machines will be put onto the property.

In all, PokerTek has now installed 230 PokerPro tables globally. PokerTek CEO Chris Halligan said that he is “delighted beyond words that an operator of Excalibur’s quality is opening a 100% PokerPro poker room on the strip.”

According to Excalibur’s VP of Gaming Operations Todd DeRemer, the property decided to utilize the technology in order to boost to a poker room that has been “on the decline from a customer base (standpoint)” for the last three years.

The move signifies the turning of a new leaf for live poker rooms around the nation. PokerTek tables offer the same experience of a live card game, minus a real dealer. Similar to online poker, these new PokerPro tables will also be able to deal out a significant amount of hands per hour. In addition, it will cut down on costs for hiring new dealers, and will offer a more efficient and exciting way for customers wanting to try out a new spin on poker.

Game selection for these new electronic poker tables will include Texas Hold Em, Omaha, and 7-Card Stud, with the games being spread as low as $.50/$1 up to $2/$4. Excalibur will be holding freerolls and lower hourly rake to promote the new tables, and will even offer low stakes Pot Limit Omaha games.

Yuval Brohnstein Takes Down 2 FTOPS Events in ONE Night!

August 14, 2008

Full Tilt Player “yuvee” Wins FTOPS #14 and #15.

Online and Live Poker professional Yuval Brohnstein made FTOPS history last night, doing something very unprecedented in this poker series since its inception in 2006.

Playing under his poker handle “yuvee,” he first navigated through a pro-infested field during the $500 H.O.R.S.E. event that included the likes of Steve Zolotow and Bryan Devonshire to take down the title and a paycheck of $70k+.

Later on in the evening, he entered the $200 No Limit Hold Em Turbo event, which historically has been a shovefest during the middle and of course later stages of the tourney. Somehow, he managed to squeak through the donkfield of 2,400+ entrants en route to his 2nd FTOPS win of the night and a score of nearly $102,000!

This was Brohnstein’s first FTOPS win since 2006.

For more information on how you can participate in future FTOPS events, you can always check out our detailed Online Poker section of our site to see a list of in-depth reviews on sites just like Full Tilt Poker.

Overall Nevada Casino Revenue Down Almost 2% in June.

August 12, 2008

A recent report came out this week that showed casino revenue in the state of Nevada was down 1.9% in June as compared to the same time last year. The slumping economy is the most likely culprit for the slight dip, however, it is important to note that revenues still hit $12.5 billion win for the Nevada casino community.

The mecca of the gambling world has always proven to be quite resilient, even through massive downturns in the economy. Casino owners are still raking in hundreds of millions of dollars, and until people begin to stop frequenting Vegas I really don’t see a reason why this trend will ever go in reverse. Combined with top notch gaming, properties, and other amenities and attractions, Las Vegas has always catered to both the recreational tourist and of course the average gambler.

Despite our possible dive into a recession for the first time in a few years, the U.S. gaming industry is still showing no signs of letting up. It will be interesting to see what kind of boost the casinos might get if the UIGEA possibly gets reversed and big-time gaming conglomerates get their own piece of the online gambling pie.

Time will tell…

Good Buddy of Mine ‘Charder30′ Makes 2 Impressive FT’s.

August 12, 2008

charder30One of the best online poker players you may have never heard about made a very nice little killing tonight on PokerStars. ‘Charder30‘ as he’s known on the internet circuit made the final table of both the $109 Rebuy and The $162 Freezeout on Stars this evening. He’s a regular on one of my favorite online poker forums over at Neverwin Poker and has been nothing but a cool dude to me when we talk on AIM and on the boards of course.

Anyways, I told him I would give him a personal shout out of course for pwning silly in both of these extremely tough tournaments. As of right now he’s still playing in the $162, and finished in 5th in the Rebuy for just over $10k. By the time I’m done posting this, I’ll just hope he takes down the $100k Guaranteed and the solid $33k payday it entails - lol.

For more on his own personal poker trials and tribulations, you can visit his blog located below.

Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth Doing What They Do Best…

August 11, 2008

Lip-synching of course! In their own music video no less…oh Lord.

I came across this piece after perusing the wasteland of dynamic video media known as YouTube, I came across this solid gem of WSOP Main Event winners Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth lip-synching in a poker music video!

The song, promptly called the “All In Rap,” features Chan, Hellmuth, and Layne Flack doing their best Diddy impersonations in this hot new joint that will undoubtedly be the most horribly criticized piece of music in the history of recording…

There’s really nothing more to explain here other than this - WATCH THE VIDEO immediately, you won’t be disappointed.

All In Rap With Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth.

Cocky Poker Pro David Williams Pimp Slapped?

August 9, 2008

LOL David Williams picIt seems poker pro David Williams really can’t seem to get himself out of the public spotlight lately. The guy seems to live on making sure his name is constantly being talked about - either with shenanigans on the felt - or off it. Since becoming a household name after his 2nd place finish in the 2004 WSOP Main Event, Williams has found himself in quite a few media scandals since then.

A few years back, Neverwin Poker broke a story that saw the young Bodog Pro in a foot fetish porno that he did during his Magic the Gheythering days (emphasis on “ghey”), prompting rumors that either he was in desperate need of cash at the time - or was simply just looking to get a little freaky in front of the camera. In either case, an eminent PR mess was somehow avoided, as a lot of the mainstream poker media refused to comment on the story despite the popularity of it on the forum boards and other gambling websites.

From that point on though, there was just a stigma about David Williams that always seemed to follow him around. The rumors floating about that he was an arrogant prick and loved to flaunt his reputation as much as he loved to flaunt his love for mid-digital toes (insert “haha” here please) sometimes preceded his reputation as one of the best young players on the circuit.

Well, this was definitely put up for speculation after an incident that supposedly went down last year at a nightclub in Las Vegas.

A poster on 2+2 basically said a trusted friend and confidante confirmed with him that David Williams was the victim of a vicious pimp smack by a bouncer who could no longer stand David’s attitude. D.W. apparently was running his mouth off - and well…lemme just paste a quote from the post itself that gives a little more detailed insight on the situation.

“DW was hanging out with a red pro from FT and the red pro also had a friend in town who happened to deal drugs for a living. So theres a decent sized group and DW rolls up to this (white, doesnt look like a UFC fighter or nuttin) dude and gives him the “who the eff are you” routine. Dudes like “what?” cuz he cant believe a mofo would roll on him like that. DW is like ” i said who are you”, Dude open hand BITCH SMACKS DW…DW tries to maintain his cool image and rolls back up like he was gonna do something. Dude BITCH SMACKS him again, this time knocking him to the floor. At this point DW decides enough is enough and starts yelling for security as he is being assaulted.”

The thread takes a turn for the best when David’s good buddy Theo Tran chimes in demanding the OP to put up or shut up, and basically puts up $10k on behalf of D.W. to prove that this actually went down. In the end, a lot of shit was talked, more fun photoshops were made of David Williams, and the original poster essentially refused to give up his sources or who the mysterious Red Full Tilt Pro was that was with D.W. the night the incident supposedly happened.

For more fun times and to chime in yourself on this interesting little story, visit the Two Plus Two boards and check out the thread HERE.
