History of Online Gambling Deposits

Although it seems like online gambling has been around forever, the industry is actually still very young, and continues to develop and mature every day. When online gambling began the deposit options were much different from players’ modern day options, and quite frankly things used to be a lot easier. The rest of this page will look at the timeline of deposit options that has lead us to our present day situation.

PayPal Era

When Internet gambling was just starting out the main deposit method was PayPal. This was so convenient for players, because PayPal was already the main online payment processor, so most people had accounts and were comfortable using it. Also, players could move money from their bank account to their poker account and back extremely quickly.

Online gambling saw a huge increase in popularity during this time period because of easy access to funds through PayPal, and convenient and quick withdrawals right to your bank account. However, this didn’t last long…

Once eBay bought out PayPal, they made PayPal drop online gambling payment processing, so that was the end of that. PayPal has never resurfaced as a major deposit option.

NETeller Era

After PayPal pulled out everyone in the industry freaked out because they thought it was the end of the world. There were basically no other viable deposit/withdrawal options, so online gamblers felt like it was doomsday. However, a company called NETeller quickly stepped up and filled the void.

NETeller was similar to PayPal in the fact that they were an online wallet that allowed players to link their checking account right to their favorite online poker site and make seamless transactions between the two. Once again, everyone was happy as there was a safe, secure, and quick payment processing system to service the players. However, this one wouldn’t last either…

The ? Era

After the passing of the UIGEA in 2006 NETeller, as a public company, was forced to pull out of the USA market. This once again left online gamblers with no viable options for deposit/withdrawal, and the entire doomsday scenario played out again. Other companies such as Click2Pay quickly stepped up to the plate and offered USA players an e-wallet service, but since NETeller left there really has been no one that has controlled the market like NETeller and PayPal did.

Currently there are a slew of deposit options, including e-wallets, credit cards, pre-paid cards, wire transfers, and many more. Basically players have to try options out to find out what works for them, as we’re still waiting for a major payment processor who can reliably service USA players to step up. However, as long as the UIGEA is in place that is highly unlikely, because the USA banks are actualy responsible for blocking gambling transactions.
